Worthy of a reblog from 94monkeys
Last night was the eye doc, where I found out something surprising that some of you might want to know.
I’ve had some dryness in one eye for a while now — not enough to get it checked out, but enough to irritate me occasionally. I figured as long as I was in checking my glasses prescription, I would get it looked at, and that it was probably nothing.
The dryness turned out to be a symptom of sun/ wind damage on the outer membrane of my eye (technical term: pinguecula). ”Do you spend a lot of time outside?” the optometrist asked me. Well, I run outside in a windy place along a body of water that causes UV rays to bounce right into my eyes… oh crap.
Now, it’s at a very mild stage and I’m currently treating it with OTC eye drops and so on. But I’m going to have to start wearing sunglasses when I run outside in the daytime from now on, and probably the rest of the time as well. (I apologize to everyone I thought looked like a tool in them before. Now I understand for some of you it was probably necessary or a good idea. I will also take this time to apologize to Bono, he knows why.)
Being super-pale and mindful of it, I would never ever go out for a run in the summer without sunscreen on. I wish I had taken the same care before for my eyes, but I will from now on. I hope if any of you have had similar issues, and you are able, you will get this checked out sooner rather than later.
