12 Posts of ’12 on 12-12-12

I thought today would be the perfect day to reflect on 2012. I know a lot of people are OVER 2012, but it was a life changing year for me. Now don’t get me wrong I always enjoy a new year and a blank slate, but 2012 will always be a very special year for me. It was so hard to pick just 12 posts – but as a scanned through my archives, these evoked the most emotions or memories for me.

  1. I Got a New Job
  2. Airplane Meet Cute
  3. 2012 Mantra
  4. David Cook & Me
  5. FINISHER
  6. California Love
  7. WIW – Broken Record Edition
  8. Sarah & Jenn: Then & Now
  9. January-June Cloud
  10. The Tall & Short of It: An Epiphany
  11. Weekend in Review
  12. Marine Corps Marathon Thoughts

A new job, life relocation, 2 marathons, meeting my idol/future husband, lots of self discovery and sowing some wild oats.

Of course these posts also make me look back jealous of the 175lb me COMPLAINING as I sit ~8lbs heavier today. The airplane guy never planned out, but he was a good distraction while I was in the midst of some ex-bf drama. California was a magical trip and fell at such a pivotal time in my life.  I also finally got to start living a “normal” twentysomething city life after years in the rural country (eastern Connecticut, Texas, Alabama) these past 7 years.

I love life these days. Thankfully this year I’ve been able to have a good balance of not having work take over my life. However I’m still working finding a balance when it comes to fitness and a social life.

My year on Twitter (over 3200 tweets)!

My Top tweet of the year was: Me and @thedavidcook pre-race day @lamarathonhttp://t.co/CkCNDP54

Top Words I tweeted about: miles, Freddie (my dog), #FYEMAU (Miss AU Pageant), Weekend, DC, #RoommateChronicles (the nashtag my roommate and I use), class, life, birthday, fun

I had a pretty awesome 2012!

Work From Home Day – In Review

  • Wake up at 9am
  • Check email
  • Go out to move my car due to gardeners with chainsaws trimming braches
  • While out: buy coffee, stamps, laundry detergent, christmas lights. Drop off dry cleaning. Stop by bank to get quarters for laundry.
  • Head home
  • Answer emails
  • Turn on the Music Choice Christmas station
  • Start grading student papers
  • Hang up christmas lights around the windows in the living room
  • Light fresh balam christmas candles
  • grade more papers
  • make chili and let it simmer
  • put in laundry
  • Texts and social media throughout

Still to do

  • work on a conference travel budget proposal
  • fold laundry and put sheets back on bed/make bed
  • iron dress pants
  • lay out my christmas tree sweater dress decorations/pattern for a bar crawl this weekend
  • review files from last year on faculty selection, start drafting this years
  • watch Castle from last night
  • 30 Day Shred
  • light jog in this 70 degree weather
  • eat chili

4 things about 4 numbers

1. I have two 1st dates this week. Josh is leaving for his 18 month overseas foreign service duties in under two weeks so our little summer/fall fling is quickly wrapping up.

2. I bought a size 12 Calvin Klein dress on clearance this weekend. Not only did it fit, but it may have been a touch too big in places.

3. I forgot how much I missed 30 day shred and what a good workout it can be.

4. Went to the oral surgeon this morning for my post surgery check up and he said all wisdom teeth holes are healing very well.

Feeling very thankful today…

  • Amazing friends near and far
  • My health and physical abilities
  • Being in a better financial place and rapidly reducing my debt
  • Not being afraid of the unknown
  • Finally finding a satisfying work-life balance
  • Being able to be the bigger person
  • Documenting the last 15 years of my life in paper and digital journals as well as social media in recent years
  • My ability to overcome adversity
  • Listening (and laughing my ass off) to Elvis Duran and the Morning show via IHeartRadio on my commute everyday
  • Having an insatiable thirst for knowledge

The weekend in bullets and pictures

  • Friday Night: Cleaned my apartment top to bottom and wall to wall
  • Saturday AM: Bachelorette Party Prep (this was my first time throwing one)
  • Saturday Midday: 8 mile training run
  • Saturday Night: Bachelorette Party started at my place and then we headed into DC for some debauchery
  • Sunday AMish: Bachelorette Brunch
  • Sunday Afternoon: DC to meet up with two beloved Auburn friends who are in town
  • Sunday Night: Got 3 calls in a row while still in DC from Josh who had 103 degree fever following a bad reaction to a flu shot. Go to his place and play nurse helping to break his fever and make him feel better
  • Monday AM: Josh’s fever is back up. I call out of work in the morning and take him to urgent care. While in the grocery picking up his prescription he picks up some flowers for me to thank me for taking care of him. Help him get comfortable back at his place.
  • Monday Midday: I go to the dentist because my wisdom teeth have lead to relentless blinding pain since Friday (but I managed to tolerate as best as possible). 1 tooth needs out ASAP, but the other 3 need to go to. Get a referral for an oral surgeon and 3 prescription to help with gum inflammation and pain. Since I’m running a marathon this weekend and have my friend’s wedding the following weekend I scheduled all 4 teeth to be removed Nov 9th and I will be going under anesthesia for the first time ever. Yikes!
  • Monday afternoon: In the office to check emails and prep for teaching class tonight.

Year in review

Today is my last full day as a 28 year old.

I love taking time to reflect on periods of time – be it a school year, a new year, a birthday etc.

28 was a big year
-trained for and ran my first marathon
-left a job that I loved
-started a new job to advance my career
-relocated my life 700 miles
-got a roommate for the first time in 7 years
-ended my first serious relationship
-got sidelined by a heel/foot injury
-dug myself out of most of my credit card debt
-started a skin care, moisturizer, eye cream regimen
-rocked my Halloween – sugar skull – make up/costume
-met David Cook and got to tell him about how he inspired me to start running
-starting buying mediums and size 12s on the regular
-strengthened old friendships
-added flossing to my daily routine
-truly learned: how hard I can push myself, how much I can overcome and how settling is not an option

Looking forward to 29 and capping off my twenties with a bang!

Weekend in Review

This was a weekend of FUN, FITNESS, FOOD, and FELLAS!

Friday: After work I had pizza and beer with my cute college friend. Sadly a couple-friend of his joined us instead of dozens of hot runner friends like him. Regardless it was really fun to talk college, running, life, as well as innocently flirt.

Saturday: Woke up at 6:45am for a 11 10 mile training run, my first double digit run since the LA Marathon. Thankfully it was 68 out and overcast which felt great. I finally went on the awesome Mount Vernon trail and really enjoyed my run. Great splits and I found my stride (Bonus my heel spur wasn’t acting up). I was supposed to do 11, but I was crunched for time. Pretty much changed from one set of running clothes to a new set (sans shower) to head into DC with my HUNGOVER roommate for a Scavenger Hunt/Challenge/Race. We covered over 6 miles during the race itself (my legs were not happy with me towards the end). We had strangers take pics of us doing things at various points, so sing to people, and my poor roommate took one for the team and let me spray vinegar into her mouth from several feet away so she could spit it in a cup as part of the challenge. Considering she already puked once that morning, I don’t know how she didn’t right then and there. Took a post run/race shower/nap. Went on a second date with a guy I saw last week for dinner and drinks. We did get yummy Thai food and find a cool hidden speakeasy bar, but I wasn’t feeling him – he came across as boring and clumsy (he spilled on himself twice). I ended up obviously dodging a goodnight kiss which he called me out on via text later – oops!

Sunday: I was supposed to have brunch with my friend Beth, but she cancelled due to being hungover from a Bachelorette party. I have been messaging with a guy on OKC for a few weeks while he’s been out of the country for work and he got back Friday and mentioned he didn’t have plans Sunday. So I randomly messaged him to see if he was still free and we made plans for a mid-day brunch. I had a GREAT time. First of all he’s 6’3 (I am such a height snob, but I’m the first to admit it so that makes it okay). He’s really outgoing and talkative and INTERESTING. He was telling me about all kinds of things I didn’t know about  – from technology to stocks to Walk Disney. He also dropped a bunch of casual compliments or casual touches. After brunch we went for coffee and he introduced me to the clover coffee at Starbucks – I LOVE COFFEE, how did I not know about this. He was such a flirty smart ass, but then also extremely chivalrous. He opened doors, pulled out my seat and at the end of the date HE TOOK MY HAND AND KISSED IT. I blushed like a schoolgirl a bunch during the date, but I thought I was going to melt right there. It was so unexpected, but really cute. And for those of you keeping count – this was 1000x better than when a former flame awkwardly kissed my arm at a football game a few years ago. He followed up with texting me last night to make plans to hang out later this week. We’re going to an indoor driving range with a bar that is pretty popular in the area and I’ve been wanting to go.

PS – All the fellas had J names to make things extra confusing:  Friday-Josh, Saturday-Jack, Sunday-Josh

1 month

My 29th birthday is 1 month from tomorrow. In all honesty I am both excited and horrified.

I really try to not play the “this is where I thought I’d be in life” game too often, but birthdays tend to make you do that.

The Good

  • I’m FINALLY living exactly where I want to be
  • My life is social, active and exciting
  • I ran a freaking marathon in my 28th year and training for another
  • For the first time in my life I have a decent handle on my finances
  • I now work to live, as opposed to live to work. I loved my old job, but I am so much more than a job

The Bad No So Good

  • I want to be a long term serious relationship
  • I’m tired of never getting below 176, why won’t the damn scale budge
  • Grey hairs and wrinkles are not cute. Thank God for hair dye and magical potions from L’Oreal
