9-11-01

15 Septembers ago I was a freshman in college. I remember just 3 weeks before driving over the bridge and taking in my last look at the NYC skyline on my way up to CT. I didn’t have class until 9:30am that Tuesday and in true freshmen form I slept until 9:10 or so before hustling to class. My professor was already there since he also taught at 8am, but as other students filed in they brought word that a plane hit the WTC finally another student walked in saying a second plane hit WTC. My professor dismissed us and as I walked through the student center back to my room someone told me a plane hit the Pentagon. All I remember is being shocked and scared that we were under attack even before walking to the lobby of my dorm and seeing a grainy picture of the twin towers burning. New friends on my floor quickly became my family as we watched in horror and took quick audits and who has family working downtown or at the Pentagon. Phone lines were tied up, but I was able to reach my family who all thankfully worked on Long Island aside from my one cousin who was able to make contact with family within a few hours. That night my college held a beautiful candlelight vigil. Maybe that is why I loved my university so much and have made a career of working with freshman. That was a day that could have taken me off course, I could have easily left school and gone home. I did go home to visit the weekend following 9/11, I remember seeing ground zero still smoking as we again crossed the bridge. For a very long time I thought of 9/11 as obviously a world event, but especially as New York event. When I moved to DC in 2012 I learned about 9/11 from the eyes of my DC area friends. This year I made a point to go to the Flight 93 memorial in Shanksville, PA to learn more about those heroes and pay my respect.

15 years later I feel get sad and mad thinking about that day, but I also remember the love we all felt towards one another and the heroism of our first responders.

Never Forget.

Getting in gear

The Army 10 miler is a month out. I’ve thrown together a 5 week training plan that kicked off this week. I’m focused on building up mileage, but not speed. I’m planning on walk/run intervals. 4 miles is the furthest I’ve run since 1x in early August and like 1x in June.

Workouts in review:

  • Sun: 2.25 miles
  • Tues: Body Pump
  • Wed: Yoga
  • Thurs: Cardio Strength
  • Sat/Sun: 4 miles (planned)

Something’s afoot

Went to see a new podiatrist yesterday (new insurance with the new job).

He had a different approach to my PF/heel pain (and it didn’t hurt that the doctor was cute). He didn’t xray me, he looked at my foot, pressed places and asked about pain, asked me to stand barefoot, examined my arches, wiggled my foot around, etc.

He came to the conclusion that my achilles are super tight and that is the root of the issue. He also said just based on how my feet are, I am prone to PF.

He gave me some basic inserts, prescribed me an anti-inflammatory to try out, and insisted I stretch daily – especially first thing in the morning. He didn’t think another round of cortisone was a good idea since it’s only provided 5 weeks of relief the first time I had it and did nothing the second time.

So the plan is to trying and really get strict about stretching. My routines has been a disaster lately among all the life changes, but with the Army 10 miler coming in a month and the fact that I want to remain active the rest of my life I need to treat my foot right.

WIW

Today: 200.6

Last week: 199.2

I don’t like seeing a 2–, but I’m not shocked. I ate and drank my face off in Chicago plus I just started my period.

But the good news is that I did make it to the Gold’s Gym near the new house yesterday and went to Body Pump. I also joined the campus rec center here yesterday and went to lunchtime yoga today!

On top of all that I have an appt with a new podiatrist this afternoon to deal with my stupid plantar fasciitis.

I’m getting my act together…

WIW – I have a plan edition

Today: 199.2

I gained 5 pounds this month, but like I’ve said before this month has been abnormally hectic.

BUT I have a plan.

  • I am signing up for the on campus (I work at a college) gym membership which is stupid cheap. I have already blocked out yoga 3x week on my calendar over lunch and there is cardio strength class after work on Thursdays.
  • I have yet to get the Golds gym in my new town, but I also plan to get there next week. I was really hoping the AM fitness class schedule would work better for me (like a 6:30am class, but 5:45am is too damn early), but there are some good evening and weekend options.
  • With the temperature finally calming down I also NEED to get back to running. I have the Army 10 miler on Oct 9 – the goal is to be in shape to slooowly finish it injury free
  • I also booked a appt with my new PCP so I can get a referral for a new podiatrist because my poor heal has not been a happy camper for months (I also get up my semi-annual denist appt)
  • Oh and I have the Beach Body 3 day refresh which I plan to do when I get back from Chicago next week.

My pants are tight

August has been a doozy with my birthday, moving into the house, vacation, house projects galore (and for the foreseeable future), and finally an 85 hour 6 day work week in prep for the start of the school year.

The first day of the semester is here and I have not been to the gym in a month. I feel very out of shape and know I could at least be eating better. I’m out of town this weekend for a wedding (hi E!) in Chicago and then plan on getting into the groove of a new gym, a new schedule, and back to meal prep.

My life has had a lot of changes lately, but I need to ground myself and find balance. There will always been work and there will always be house projects. I cannot ignore myself!

PS. Full disclosure I looked into deferring my Army 10 miler registration, but they don’t offer deferments and its too late to transfer. So I think I am going to devise a walk/run plan because there is no way I’ll be trained up for it properly on 10/9.
