Motivational Monday: Real Women Have Curves

A few months ago when facebook did the doppelganger week I put Kate Winslet. I got it from time to time – mainly around when Titanic came out and Kate had a fuller figure. Well I’m hoping to one day be a doppelganger for the svelte Kate!

FUCK YEAH FIVE!!

Just finished week 3 of half marathon training with a 5 mile run. I had an awesome pace the whole time and only stopped to walk for about 2-3 minutes once. Did the run in 59:17!! Running in the evening was awesome – the last leg wasn’t so bad because the weather was cooling down as opposed to warming up like with morning runs. Plus I found a breathable Adidas polo I had and cut the sleeves and collar off to run in – it was awesome. I can’t wait to be down another 5 pounds so I can buy some legit running clothes. I really feel like the shirt made a big difference.

Love You Daddy

Today is Father’s Day which is bittersweet. I lost my Dad in November 2007.

My father was a thin man most of this young life, but my whole childhood he was always a chubby/fat guy (6’2 300+ pounds). Then in high school he lost 100 pounds with slimfast and exercise. My dad actually could FIT my pants in high school….crazy. He looked great and his life completely changed (my parents also got divorced around then too, but that’s another story).

My dad kept the weight off for 8ish years, but then he retired at 55. He moved to Florida, traveled and ate…a lot. He fell out of his routine and within 3 years he gained all the weight back and then some.

My dad was not happy with himself and he didn’t think he could lose it again the right way, so he decided to get a lap band. I wasn’t thrilled, but no one could change his mind. He was set on the lap band when his doctor told him it wasn’t permanent enough and that if he wanted to keep the weight off he really needed gastric bypass which is a more invasive surgery. I remember he told me he was getting the gastric bypass only a few days before his schedule surgery. I had a bad feeling about it, it scared me, but his mind was made up.

To make a long story short he died at the hospital 3 days after his surgery.

I still have lots of emotions and thoughts about his death, but mainly it was so UNNECESSARY. Obesity has plagued so much of my family and refuse to let my weight control or end my life. Like I’ve said before I started this change in January and it’s a lifestyle change. I just want to say that I believe in each of you and as hard as it gets stay strong, because your life is worth it!

It’s official I can’t go to Publix without spending a small fortune, but they have SUCH great stuff. My purchases:

Hello New Wardrobe

Okay, not “new” per say, but I can finally fit all the clothes that I’ve bought over the years that never quite fit, but I had always told myself – I’ll just work out until they fit…which rarely happened.

I was up faaaaar too late the other night going through my closets and trying on clothes that haven’t seen the light of day – like DKNY pants in size 14, a LARGE skirt from express, and various other things. Who needs to go shopping, when I have all these never before worn clothes already in my closet!

Off to the gym in the pouring rain – sad today wasn’t a pool day.

Experiments X 2

Soooo I joined MyPlate yesterday reluctantly. I really don’t want to become a calorie counting obsesser – it’s not my style and I’m bad at math. However I want to get a clearer picture of what I’m not getting in my diet or getting too much of. I see some of you folks losing 2 pounds a week and I’d love for weight to drop off me at that pace. I’ve been an exercise fiend and eating well, but I want to see what my problem is, it could be that I’m not eating enough or enough of the right things. So I am doing this mini experiment. I’m going to be using MyPlate for the next 2 weeks leading up to my 10K and see what I learn.

Also starting today I am going to be doing a plank every day for the next 2 weeks (I was inspired by http://losingweightinthecity.com/) and see how my time and form HOPEFULLY improve – however I will not be videoing myself.

Run-spo

Apparently, my new running obsession has ignited a passion in the people around me.

One of my best friends who I “forced” to run my 5K with me has actually really taken to running. She sent me this text yesterday: I spent $125 on running clothes and I blame you.

A grad student who has been working in our office for the past month said that I’ve inspired her to train for another half marathon (she’s run 2 previously, but has been on hiatus).

Another one of my best friends who is coming to Nashville with me for the 4th of July and originally was going to just cheer me on in my 10k is actually training to run in the 5K portion of the race in Nashville! She doesn’t know if she’ll be ready or can run the whole time, but she’s training and hopes the heat in the south won’t kill her 😛

I’m so proud of all of my friends, I think surrounding yourself with a support system is so important. I’m thankful to have all of you on here, but having friends in real life will help me continue this lifestyle change.

Getting to know me…

I added a “More About Me” section to my tumblr page (aka essentially my facebook profile), but thought I’d post it here to incase any of you cared 😛
