Joie De Vivre: Summer 2014 edition
This has been one of the best summers of my life. 2004 was a great summer, also 2006, but I think this has been my favorite summer since! This is especially wonderful since last summer was one of the worst ones ever. Last summer my work was consuming me and making me miserable, on top of the fact I was not coping with turning 30 well. It was a REALLY dark summer. However this summer held so much light and joy. I went back and reread my journal from the summer, it loved reliving all of these moments.

I am also really looking forward to Fall, lots of things on the horizon to look forward to as well. I’m just so happy that I’m so happy. One of my favorite quotes is “It is always the darkest before the dawn.” I pushed through the darkest hours and the light has never felt so good.
Why are there so many tattoos now? Some of it is clearly a statement of individuality, or a love of art, symbol and story. But those of us who wonder should remember that while a few are tattooed for shock value, many are just using their bodies to tell us stories, to share emotions. They’re wearing their pain, their loss, their hopes, their values, their dreams and fantasies
Weekend in Review
Friday
- 5.5 mile bike ride to Sports Authority to get new nose clips since I somehow lost mine, followed by a 5.5 mile ride back home (found a cute new park in Potomac Yards)
- 400m Swim
- Laundry and couch potato status with my roommate
Saturday
- 9.5 mile hike on the Billy Goat Trail at Great Falls with T
- Cooked a yummy and healthy dinner for us
- Snuggles on the couch and watched 6 episodes of “Naked and Afraid” on demand which led to some interesting “what if” conversations
Sunday
- Church for the first time in weeks (I literally haven’t been home to go since the end of June)
- Food prep for the week
- 2 mile speed run with Freddie
- 400m Swim
- Andrew McMahon, Matt Nathanson, Gavin DeGraw concert at Wolf Trap with a whole gaggle of friends. This was somehow my first time seeing Andrew who was stellar. I went in feeling neutral about Matt, but DAYUM does that man put on a show. He won me over for sure, I’m currently listening to him on spotify, debating what to purchase. Gavin played a great show and sounded on point, but he wasn’t super interactive.
Happy 31st to me
Today’s my birthday! I’ll officially be 31 at 4:58pm. I had a stellar weekend in Dewey Beach, DE with friends. T came up yesterday and I’ve spent most of the afternoon with him at the Rehoboth Boardwalk.
Life is grand.
I feel so loved!
2 truths and a lie
This Weekend….
- I cried while trying (for 30 minutes) to put my front wheel back on my bike before my test run of the tri course and also cried while riding because the course confused me until I noticed last year’s spray painted markers.
- I had an amazing time camping with T and another couple. It was fun cooking in the fire pit, playing games, not being attached to technology, and snuggling in a tent.
- I managed to go hiking and kayaking without bruising myself severely.
(check my previous post to see which was the lie)
Weekend Amazingness Recap
Friday
- Actually had a great day at work and left early to start my weekend
- Met T (new guy I’ve been seeing) at his place and met both of his roommates, one roommates girlfriend, and a boy neighbor. All of them were super cool.
- We all headed out to Jazz in the Garden which was packed, but lovely. Great people watching, lots of hand holding, and stolen kisses.
- Had a “girl code” moment with roommate’s girlfriend who grabbed by purse while I was in the bathroom when they group was switching locations. The boys thought we were crazy when we talked about looking out for purses is an unspoken girl code.
- After Jazz we headed back to their apt and hung out, the group then went to another bar for the night, but T and I stayed back…
Saturday
- Somehow after lots of snuggling and very little sleep I was up at 8am to head to southern MD for a swim lesson with my old roommate’s dad
- driving 65 miles with a smitten hangover is no easy feat. Doing swimming drills for an hour is also hard.
- I got TONS of great advice and techniques from my friend’s dad. my friend little sister was there to demonstrate techniques as well.
- I need A LOT OF WORK, but I feel educated and know I have 4 weeks to make a marked improvement. I now know what to what to work on and how to structure my pool time. Goals are good things.
- On my drive home while at a gas station, I saw a facebook notification that a wine tasting party I was going to was at 2pm, not 4:30pm like I thought. I was like 30 miles away and not showered.
- Let the hostesses know I was going to be late, booked homed, showered, and ran out the door.
- Had a blast with the girls and guys at the tasting, but I was so tired that the wine was making me sleeping.
- Texted with T, who had gone back to sleep until 1pm – jealous!
- I came home and napped while watching OITNB until I finally put myself to sleep at 11.
Sunday
- Slept like a freaking champion
- Woke up on my own with enough time to go to church
- While at church got a text from T wanting to take me to lunch
- Went to lunch in old town with T and then walked a ton of the Mount Vernon trail towards Mount Vernon reading like every historical marker. We then hung out by the water in Belle Haven park for a long while just taking, laughing, smooching etc
- When T dropped me off at home (I was nearly late for a dinner date with my roommate because we lost track of time) he already asked to see me this week before my long weekend in NC
- Had an awesome roommate date for Pho, my first time and I loved it.
I’m going to have T over tomorrow and cook AND have him meet Freddie. T’s pretty freaking great. I’m a smitten kitten, but I’m trying to just let things happen. I’ve let things fizzle out with the other guy I went out with twice. We texted some Wed and Thurs, but I haven’t reached out since then. I’m not really the dating multiple people at once kinda girl anyway, especially since I really like T.
Last night kicked (pun intended) off my summer Kickball league. This was my first time playing in a Kickball league and I wasn’t sure how competitive it would be. It was certainly competitive, but our team who were all new to the league pulled out a WIN. Both my “at bats” were successful, got on base both times and ended up scoring both times due to power kickers behind me in the line up. I need to be better in the field, but still a solid showing!
Bonus we play at Gravelly Point Park (went there with my sister recently to watch the planes at Reagan take off and land). Such a fun spot right next to the Potomac with great views.
Since we were playing in Arlington we all had cars/carpooled and were able to get across town to the after party bar which was also super fun. Looking forward to this season!
Weekend Wrap Up
Friday: Insanity and 10 mile bike ride as well as lots of laziness around the house.
Saturday: Insanity, run, trip to Baltimore to celebrate a friends’s birthday, out in Canton Square (got picked up by a guy who came up to me as soon as I walked in the bar).
Sunday: Baltimore brunch, Os game (and victory), back home for a 3rd date that involved tacos, watching Frozen, and some NOT watching Frozen if you know what I’m saying…
Monday: Insanity, pool, swimming, and an early bedtime.
I also listened to John Mayer’s XO cover roughly a million times (and counting) all weekend
Friday Fast Five
1. I’m in the midst of my 4 day weekend
2. My pool opens this weekend
3. I’m headed to Baltimore tomorrow for the night to celebrate my friend’s 30th
4. Yesterday were my back to back dates. Date number one which was a first date was a bust, so it was nice to look forward to date number 2 which was a second date.
5. Date 2 went much much much better. It was great to see him again and we had even more chemistry this time around. He even told me TWICE how funny I was (be still my heart). Great conversations and cocktails for 4 hours. Upon walking me to my car he laid quite a few kisses on me along the way and he wants to see me again this weekend after I get back from Baltimore!
