Yesterday was the first week of the Urban Hiking class I am teaching for 5 weeks at the University I work for.

I felt like I was “legit” and the students saw me as such. I know I have the skills, knowledge, and experience, but it’s still a weird identity shift to see myself as a qualified outdoor educator and enthusiast since it’s only something I’ve gotten into in the last few years.

We spend the first hour of class doing some icebreakers, going over the syllabus, discussion health/safety, and expectations. It was a great time, I enjoyed 1/1 conversations with different students throughout the 3.9 miles we logged! I’m excited to #OptOutside for the next few weeks with them!

This northern Virginia winter wonderland means that work is cancelled, but fitness classes at my gym are cancelled tonight too. Yay no work, but womp, I was going to go to Body Combat and Pump.

I guess this means I need to dust off my workout DVDs and see what I can do at home. I’m thinking each level of Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred and some yoga with Adrienne on YouTube.

Yesterday T and I drove out to Shenandoah to hike Old Rag. We’ve each hiked it a few times, but we hadn’t done it together before.

Old Rag is about 11 miles roundtrip and can be difficult at times, especially due to its various rock scrambles. However, the view is well worth it!

Thanks to T trying to keep me at  “Marine pace” we did the hike in just under 5 hours. We’re both sore today, but a good sore! I like pushing my body to do what it’s truly capable of!

When I upgraded to the Fitbit Charge 2 in September it also measured cardio fitness (related to heart rate).

At first I was in the 34-38 range and then a few months ago (likely soon after when I recommitted to weight watchers and working our regularly) I got up to the 35-39 range.

Well today I checked and saw I moved up to the 36-40 range! I’m so close to moving from average-good to good-very good!

Golds FAIL

So I have a corporate Golds Gym membership and can go to any of the DC area corporate locations. I go to the Golds by my house 80% of the time, but on Mondays for the past year or so I’ve been going to a location between work and home for a 5:30PM Body Pump class.

When I first started going there was a guy instructor that I did not like, I thought he was new at first but learned he’s been an instructor for years. He was just terrible at remembering choreography. We’d have a woman named Penny sub sometimes and she was great, she reminded me a Bebe Neuwirth (aka Lilth on Fraiser and the original Velma in Chicago on Broadway).

So due to work craziness, I didn’t go to this class all summer, but when I started back in September – to my delight – Penny was the permanent instructor for the class. I’ve always been a fan of Monday workouts – start the week off right. Well, a few weeks back Penny said something about “2 more classes or something.” I thought maybe she was going to stop teaching the class. NO NO, I found out yesterday that this Golds location is CLOSING THIS WEEK. WHAT?! They apparently “notified” their primary location members, but only has like 2 TINY signs since last month announcing the closure.

I’m BUMMED. Penny was really bummed, she said she’s been teaching at this location for 14 years. She had us all take this picture end of class and encouraged us to follow her on social media (hence how I have this picture).

Also, one of my Body Pump “friends” who also went to the same 2 locations I did said she is going to switch gyms completely because she went this location more and the one by where we live only on weekends. SAD.

The Golds by me has a 6:30 Kickboxing class on Mondays that I don’t love. I see they have a 6PM RPM spin class, so maybe I’ll do that. But really I’m bummed about saying goodbye to this class and without warning.

Two 2-A-Days

After going 3 days without working out due to my conference I went to back to back Combat and Body Pump yesterday and then Pump today and Combat Express (30 min as opposed to 60).

I did get a lot of conference walking in so thankfully I was only up 0.6 at Weight Watchers today.
