How to be the most productive person in your office — and still get home by 5:30 p.m.

I don’t care if you like me or not, I have enough friends.

One of my head student leaders wrote me a sweet thank you note and included this gem that I said to him when we started working together last year!

This afternoon I’m video conferencing in for a presentation with three friends/colleagues at a regional conference in RI. We are presenting on “Fitting In Fitness: Tricks, Tips, and Techniques for Being Healthy Effective Student Affairs Professionals"

The plan is for me to present live via web cam, but lord knows what technology will throw my way, so I filmed this version yesterday and uploaded it youtube as a backup for my colleagues to play if needed. My portion of the presentation consists of "my story” and the 5 domains of Well-Being.

Feel free to check it out (I give tumblr and fitblr major props)

PS – we all decided to wear work out gear for the presentation, hence my shirt

Mental Health Morning

I could. not. even. handle the idea of going to work this morning.

I was at work late last night dealing with a staff disciplinary situation and was just in a sour mood when I got home after an annoying and stressful day. So I emailed that I was taking the morning because of a migraine (not completely true, but my head was spinning/pounding).

So this morning I got to sleep in, run 3 miles with Freddie, do a body pump workout, and make lunch.

I’d much prefer a 12:30-5:30 schedule everyday. I wonder if I could swing it!

“Coaching” my Class

I have the privilege of not only running a first year student transition to college course, but I also teach a section teaching a section as well each fall. This year I am teaching a student athlete class. I was nervous because athletics requires these D1 athletes to take the course and I was unsure of what their attitudes would be.

THANKFULLY all 22 of them are awesome. I have students from: M&W volleyball, M basketball, W Lacrosse, M Golf, M&W soccer, W rowing. Some of my students are from other countries like like Gabon in Africa, Spain, and Germany. While others are from all over the US like NC, GA, NY, PA, FL.

I was never a HS or college athlete although I always played sports in some capacity since I’m a competitive person by name. I was excited to bring my adult athletic triumphs to the table.

I’ve taught this course the past 3 years and you always adapt it to your students, but I found myself subconsciously really feeling like a coach as I talked to them about academic and student success. I think this will be a good approach for them and one they will respond to. These students know all about hard work and goal setting. I’m excited to help them transfer those parts of themselves to school and on the flip side I’m excited to learn from them as well.

I also told them I plan on coming to one of each of their games/meets this year. I haven’t been to a sporting event at this university in my almost 2.5 years here (shame on me), but I’m excited to cheer for someone I know, that’s another reason I wanted to teach these students.

Looking forward to a great semester with them and I expect that I will be writing about them on here regularly.
