Shoe Store Fail

After going to EIGHT different shoe stores I am still shoeless (I have my current sneakers, but you know what I mean). Who would have thought getting Nike+ (they have the tracking chip pocket) running shoes in size 11 would be so hard to come by. Only 1 store even had 11s and they were NOT cute. Looks like I’ll have to buy them online which I am always leary of in case they don’t fit right. RAGE!

Get it Girl

Hot damn. So I came home and watch tv until the sun started to set – regardless it was still 84 degrees at 6:30pm. I looked up a 4 mile route and told myself to just pace myself. I ALWAYS run too fast as soon as I get moving, so I wanted to keep a steady pace all the way – no or verrrry little walking. I looked when I hit mile 1 and I was a little over 13 minutes (yuck, but I know a lot that was up hill) onto mile 2ish and I was at 24ish minutes (a lot of that was flat and I was in a good groove). then I got around to mile 3ish and was at 36ish minutes – okay. Then my ipod/stop watch died (FYI I let a fellow fitblr know that under “extras” on your ipod stopwatch is an option). I ran the last mile with no music (yuck I hate that…I think that’s another reason why am AM orientation run on Monday was only okay).

I ended up doing the run in under 52 minutes. When I went to map out my run I realized instead of a 4 mile run, I did a 4.3 mile run. So that means my average pace was just under 12 MINUTES A MILE!!!! Crazy. I know I can do 10/11 minute miles in spurts and I am thrilled with that time for such a long (for me) run. It also makes me really feel confident about my 10K – at this point I want it to be under an 75 minutes/under 1 hour 15 minutes. However I’d REALLY like it under 70 minutes/1 hour 10 minutes.

I wish I had my exact time for this run, but I know it was definitely no more than 52 minutes based on looking at the clock before I left/got home and the clock on campus I passed around the halfway point.

I had a water bottle with me which was good, I drank a bottle before my run, so I wasn’t dying for it while I ran, but I did drink from it it spurts throughout. I did 3+miles without walking at all, the last 2/3 of a mile I took 2 quick walk breaks (again a danger of no music – it’s harder for me to walk when there is music… therefore easier to walk when there isn’t).

I was pretty sweaty (so much so that even after a fairly cold show I was still sweating for a few minutes until my body cooled itself enough). My breathing was good for the run and the humidity wasn’t bad at all.  I’m just trying to prep as best as possible for 8am on July 4th in Nashville – who knows what kind of weather it will be and I don’t want the weather to take a major toll on my performance.

God that was a good run. I feel so alive!

Dag Nabet Bob Saget

Instead of God damnit one of my students always said dag nabet bob saget and that’s exactly what popped into my head as I opened my gym bag to change at work and saw I forgot to pack my sports bras (yes I wear two). The old me would have skipped a workout, but instead I’m gonna go home get my bras and do my 4 mile run outside as per my half marathon training and then do some crunches at home.

Hot Hot Heat

So after going to bed at 1am I got up at 6am and made my way to campus for the parent run. It was 70 degrees and humid as heck. The run has about 15 parents, mostly dads. We also had some ROTC folks, orientation leaders and Dr Doug – our fearless leader. Dr Doug was pumped that I made it for a run! I was really excited and kept pace with folks for the first mile or so, but these people were serious.
Having 40+ year old parents out run you isn’t too good for your ego, but I had an 18 hour day ahead of me so I slowed down and ran by myself the 2nd half of the run. I forgot about all the “rolling hills” of campus – yeesh. Regardless I was pretty proud of myself. I got back prob 6 minutes after the rest of the group, but there are no losers!
One thing I’ve come to realize that since I took up running in January — EVERY day that I run outside is the hottest day I’ve ever run. So summer in Alabama is gonna be a challenge, but I’m a fighter. When there’s a will there’s a way.
I plan on doing another parent run later in the summer – maybe right before my 10K and see how much my running has progressed. I know I need to do more more more outdoor running. My outdoor pace is not nearly as good as my treadmill pace and I need to continue work on my breathing. Also I need to make time to work on sprinting as well. I know I’ll never be an amazing runner, but I continue to amaze myself as a runner!

Run Baby Run

I am currently working session 3 of 8 of our freshman orientation program aka 18 hour work days. I most likely will get home at 12:30am tonight and plan on getting up at 6:10am and going on the running tour of campus that we offer. I’ve never done the running tour, but we usually get a few handful of parents and orientation leaders to run. It’s about a 3 mile run which is also how much I need to run to kick off this weeks half marathon training. Wish we luck it has been humid as all hell here lately!

1/2 Marathon Training Week 1 – DUNZO

Mon – 3.5mi

Tues – 3mi

Wed – 3mi

Thurs – Rest

Fri – 3mi

Sat – 4mi

Sun(tomorrow) – Rest

Somehow I did 4 miles today in under 42:48. So my average pace was 10:42 min/mile. Most of the run was around 10:20 pace. The hardest part was miles 3.25-3.75 – I ran closer to an 11/12 min/mile pace then, but I pushed through and feel great!

16.5 miles for the week isn’t too shabby!

4th of July 10K – REGISTERED

In honor of National Running Day I signed up for the July 4th Music City 10K (I also ran 3 miles this morning to celebrate as well even though the humidity nearly killed me).

I am SO pumped.

Race day is ONE month and two days away

Race day is ONE month exactly before my 27th birthday

Race day us hopefully TWO months-ish before my first half marathon (still need to figure out which one to do)

Said half marathon will be ONE-ish month after my 27th birthday

God I’m so high on life today.

Soooo, I officially started half marathon training this week. Knowing my crazy work schedule I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep exactly to that schedule, but I am going to try and run 5x a week those amount – my run/rest days just may fall differently.

So the plan is:

10K on 4th of July – Actual Race TBD

Half Marathon Labor Day Weekend – Actual Race TBD

10K Update

Ok so when I went to bed last night I was pretty set on biting the bullet and doing the 10K in Atlanta for $150. Well this morning I looked into Charlotte/Raleigh 10Ks for the 4th of July because I spent the 4th there last year and contemplated going again this year.

Well in the process of looking at 10k alas I DID find one in Nashville. I’ve only been to Nashville once for a quick weekend and really enjoyed it. The race registration is only $35 and I think I could turn it into a fun weekend…as long as I can drag some people with me to help with hotel/gas costs.

10K

I’ve been laying restless in bed for about 30 minutes thinking about my next race. I really want to do a 10K before a ½ marathon. I actually looked into 10Ks even before my 5K and found one in Atlanta on the 4th of July that would be perfect for so many reasons…except by the time I found the race all the registration spots were filled (we’re talking like 40,000). I was bummed and moved on.
I’ve has very little luck with finding other 10Ks nearby (I even checked in NY/CT when I’m home for my bday) and no luck.
I looked into some half marathons for the fall and saw a bunch labor day weekend and the weeks that follow. Well while looking for halfs I stumbled back across the 10K in Atlanta on July 4th and saw they are “auctioning” 100 spots for $150 a piece. At first I thought hell no that’s a lot of money that I don’t have. However laying in bed I was thinking about trying to find a July 10K in like Nashville or someplace that would require more driving than Atlanta and I’d need to get a hotel most likely (I have friends in Atlanta I could stay with). So here I am torn.
Thoughts? I need your opinions people.
